Where to go: Kahuku on the Island of Oahu
This summer we've had a huge influx of tourists. After the pandemic everyone is traveling and it's been crazy in our area. Great for business, but we miss the quiet. So, we drove up the coast. Our family has always enjoyed getting out around the island. Oahu has such diversity, city, country, small towns, I love it.
Today we drove up the Windward coast to Kahuku Sugar Mill and Kahuku Farms. This is the 'country' as it is referred to by locals. It is small, everyone knows each other, life is slower here. Families enjoy time spent together, usually at the beach. The area also offers some fabulous food! There are several farms in the area and numerous road side stands and food trucks.
First stop was Raised By The Waves. This is a very popular plant based vegan restaurant. They often have local musicians playing. The food is local, organic, and always eco friendly. I ordered the Velzy Seamoss Smoothie, it was delicious. https://raisedbythewaves.com
We walked around the Sugar Mill and checked out the food trucks and stalls. Then we decided to grab lunch. We have two favorite spots: Seven Brothers at the Mill and Mike's Huli Huli Chicken. But there are many great food trucks to choose from. Seven Brothers has a wonderful story and the live what they believe. During Covid they stepped up (like so many restaurants in Hawaii) to help homeless and struggling families. http://www.sevenbrothersburgers.com
I ordered the seared ahi plate. A plate in Hawaii typically comes with a side of white rice and mac salad. This plate came with a side of white rice and a heaping side of local organic greens. The piece of ahi was huge!
Then we drove about a mile up the road to Kahuku Farms. It was really busy on the day we were there (over July 4th weekend). But I got some shots anyhow. The often offer fresh produce and locally grown chocolate, local honey, and the cafe has a nice menu as well. https://kahukufarms.com
