Osteoporosis

NTP

All women should focus on bone health after age 30. This is not something that I thought much about and definitely didn’t make life changes to support good bone health.

Our bones are constantly replenishing, about every 10 years your bones are entirely new. At age 53 I was diagnosed with osteoporosis. My numbers were just over the line to be considered osteoporosis, but they were. My doctor told me to come in and get a shot. I told her ‘No’ I would do it naturally. She laughed at me.

If you know me at all you know I am just a tad stubborn and when I’m told I can’t do something…I dig in my heels and do it. I told the doctor that I would not be taking the shot and would do it my way…funny because I won.

Pharmaceutical bone meds do NOT build stronger bones. The bones will appear dense in an x-ray. But the bones are actually weaker, have microscopic cracks, are more brittle, and more prone to breaking. I believe that pharmaceuticals give us a fake sense of having good bone health.

I am now in mid-osteopenia and working my way back to ‘normal’. No pharmaceuticals.

Early signs of osteoporosis:

  • Loosing height

  • Receding gums

  • Worsening posture

  • Lower back pain

  • Brittle nails

  • Shortness of breath

  • Fractures

What can you do?

  • Consume protein (about 1 gram per pound)

  • Weight bearing exercises

  • Eat fatty fish

  • Vitamin D (preferably from the sun)

  • Don’t eat highly processed oils (canola, vegetable, cottonseed, safflower, sunflower)

  • Don’t smoke

  • Limit alcohol

  • Limit highly processed foods

  • Don’t consume soda

  • Take magnesium before bed

  • Osteostrong (a biohack for bone health)
