Where to go: Waimea on the Big Island of Hawaii

I love Hawaii for many reasons. But, one is the diversity. I say it a lot and it is true, Hawaii is a mini snapshot of the world. On Oahu it is a city, we have freeways (yes Interstates that lead to no other state!), we have crazy traffic, a million people, high rise buildings, and more. Most of the time I love it. Once and a while you need an escape. For this trip we flew in to Kona airport.

Every so often I miss Kentucky, the green rolling hills and ranches and farms. The country life. We lived on an alpaca farm in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky for a decade. It was wonderful, beautiful, and we have many happy memories of that time. Our son grew up there.

When we want space to roam and to enjoy the views of farmland we head to Waimea. It is a small country town on the northern part of Hawaii. You might catch a snippet of ocean but other than that you might not know you are in Hawaii. The people are genuine and hard-working, they move at a more relaxed pace and enjoy life. I love it. You'll see cattle, sheep, goats, horses and views to take your breath away.

On this visit we were just in town for a day. But it is a small-town so that is ok. We stopped at Parker Square and spent a little time shopping.

For lunch we ate at The Fish and the Hog. It was Father's Day so my husband got to chose the restaurant. This was a great choice! So many options BBQ, fresh fish, salads, etc. and the staff is flexible about changing some things to better accommodate nutritional needs. I ordered the fish tacos on corn tortillas instead of flour. Even that is a splurge, but I was on vacation and it was Father's Day. They tacos were fresh and delicious. The restaurant has a big menu check it out https://www.fishandthehog.com/menu-1

I highly recommend Waimea. You will find the complete opposite of Waikiki. Rent a car and see the island.
